Broadway Tower Walk, Cotswolds

Nearby is the Broadway Country Park, with nature walks and a visitor centre based on the reconstruction of old barns. From the start of Broadway village this circuit climbs the scarp then follows a woodland path along the top of the hill before joining a lovely open section of the Cotswold Way to continue to the tower. The Cotswold Way also provides a very straight forward return down the hill to Broadway.

Start your walk from the Leamington Road Car Park. Turn left out of car park and left again into Colletts Field and carry on til you get to Dove Cottage – turn right continuing along a surfaced footpath to the High Street.

1. Turn left to walk along the roadside footpath, admiring the lovely houses and gardens and passing the end of Bibworth Lane (walk 2). Pass the vehicular turning circle and carry on up the former main road, rising steadily for 100 yards. Go left, over a signposted stile, then through  a tunnel under the by-pass road, to a stile/gate. Go straight ahead on a broad track, following a ‘Chipping Campden’ waymark.

2. At the top corner of woodland (waymark on post) turn right. Do not go further right, into the woodland; take a broad track rising by the side of the woodland, with brambles on the left. Pass a waymark on a post and carry on the left edge of a meadow. Pass two more waymarks on posts before reaching a waymarked stile at the top of the meadow. Bear slightly right to cross the next meadow to a waymarked stile and a surfaced road.

3. To the left is a private road to the Cotswold Conference Centre. Go straight across to a signposted (‘Fish Hill Picnic Area’) stile. The path rises quite sharply into woodland. Keep right at any junction to stay roughly parallel with the road below on the right for about ½ mile. In Spring the wood is rich in bluebells. Pass two waymarks on posts before turning left down a ramp with handrail and a few steps. There are several ‘badger trail’ waymarks. Turn right at a junction, join a more important path in 30 yards, turning left to rise steeply up a few rudimentary steps to a main road, joining the Cotswold Way.

4. Go straight across to an inviting signposted track opposite, the continuation of the Cotswold Way. Pass a waymarked post and through a kissing gate before leaving the woodland to rise across a meadow as Broadway Tower comes into view ahead. Pass a waymark on a post to follow a delightful track rising gently along the bottom of a shallow valley. Pass another marker on a post then through a kissing gate; the path is now narrow, rising to the left towards the tower. Go through a gate then a tall gate to reach the tower. Good refreshments at the Tower Cafe and the Deer Park. Even without climbing the tower the views, primarily over the Vale of Evesham, are extensive.

5. Return through the tall gate, turning left along the Cotswold Way, between fences. Go over a waymarked stile and keep to the right edge of a meadow. The steady descent is very clear to follow; there are three modern stiles, the last of which is followed by a viewpoint seat on the left. Go down a few steps to continue. Go over another stile; ‘N.T.Clump Farm’ is to the left. A sign ‘footpath to Broadway’ points the way to a waymarked post in a meadow. Go through a waymarked kissing gate, bearing slightly left to a post with two waymarks. Keep right to stay with the Cotswold Way to a waymark on a post and more gates. Cross a little stream and rise towards the village. There is another gate before a path between walls gives access to the High Street in 50 yards.

6. Carry on down the upper High Street till you come to a mini roundabout, turn right into Leamington Road, second right takes you into the car park.
