Walk details

This short circular walk explores Craig-y-Nos Country Park, stunning showcaves and even a dinosuar park in the Brecon Beacons National Park!

Whoever said that the best things come in small bundles might well have had this walk in mind. It may be just under 3 miles, covering the southern section of the magnificent Brecon Beacons, but there’s so much for all the family to see and do it can occupy you for as long as you want.

To start with there is Craig-y-Nos Country Park, 40 acres of woodland, meadows, riverbanks and lakes. Watch out for otters along the River Tawe at the start and end of the walk.

You can navigate the network of caves at the Dan-y-Ogof National Showcaves Centre for Wales, or pop into the nearby Dan-y-Ogof Farm which boasts a dinosaur park, a shire horse centre and playgrounds. Oh, and a coffee shop as well.

And if it’s history you want then check out St John the Baptist Church at Callwen, where a church has stood on the site since the 6th century.

JULIA’S VERDICT: A real Welsh rarebit! If you’re looking for an action-packed day out walking as a family, then this is it.
