National Trust Northumberland Walk
Enjoy magical views of a mighty castle ruin, miles of stunning sandy beach, historic fishing villages and wildlife-rich dunes on this family-friendly National Trust walk along the beautiful Northumberland coast.
Starting in the pretty village of Craster, the circular route takes in the romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle before continuing along Embleton Bay’s vast beach to Low Newton by the Sea.
This is a great walk all year round, with dune flowers in spring, paddling in summer, migrating birds in the autumn, and lovely light and empty paths in winter. The footpath from Craster to Dunstanburgh is an ideal place to let the children run wild.
At the castle keep an eye out for swallows and for dunlin, oyster catchers and other wading birds on the beach below.
There are excellent rock pools to check as you approach Low Newton from Embleton beach. Seals sometimes bask here too.
Low Newton’s pretty three-sided village green faces onto the sea is the perfect place for a picnic and a pint. The footpath then passes by a nature reserve before taking you back to Craster through beautiful countryside. Craster is renowned for smoked kippers, if you fancy taking some home for supper.
