At just over an hour’s drive away from Julia’s 10K Portugal holiday home, this walk makes for the perfect day trip if you’re staying around the Trancoso area.
Starting at the fountain in the mountain village of Folgosinho, the 12th century Castelo de Folgosinho will be visible perched up on a hill in front of you. Although what can be seen today was erected in 1186, it is believed that the castle is built on top of Roman remains.
Follow the route through the cobbled streets of the town before climbing through the pine forests. You’ll spot a few derelict buildings along the way, which provide an interesting contrast with the natural landscape; for instance the fascinating granite rock formations you’ll see as the route begins to loop back downhill.
On the home stretch back to our starting point, walking through the meadows and stone paths and crossing the bridge over a small river, you’ll feel like you’ve walked a small piece of Portuguese paradise.
