Behind the Scenes with Julia Bradbury and The Outdoor Guide filming Pen Y Ghent in the Yorkshire Dales
Dear Diary …
Day 1
What seems like 3,000 hours later, we have finally arrived in Horton in Ribblesdale, Yorkshire. We can’t believe we’ve driven 332 miles from Studland… thank goodness for our Subaru!
Where are we walking this week we hear you ask…?
Well, we’re off on a circular walk from Horton, up to Pen Y Ghent and we can’t wait for some good old Yorkshire views.
Before we start, let’s all get settled in…
Julia and the TOG team are off to the cosy Traddock Hotel for some good food and rest before we get walking to Pen Y Ghent from Horton.
Julia rested and ready to get walking in her Altimus gear!
From the start, this breathtaking fell tempts you with all its spectacular scenery to keep climbing to the summit.
Day 2
Half way up our ascent we got to walk past Hull Pot which is actually a cavern that has sunken in. The water rises out of it as a waterfall in the wetter months – here’s Julia standing on the opposite side of the valley to it.
Fun Fact
This is the deepest natural hole in England!
Today, Sam from Atlas Drones has got us some fantastic aerial shots… we can’t wait to see what they look like on the big screen!
As we reach the top of Pen Y Ghent, we can see the remaining two challenge peaks – Whernside and Ingleborough… we’ll leave them for another day though.
It’s not hard to see why Pen Y Ghent, although the smallest of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks, is often considered the most spectacular.
A perfect end to today’s filming with a delicious meal at the Craven Heifer Pub where the crew were also staying.
Day 3
Today we met a very special and feathery lady… the Steller’s Sea eagle Nikita from Hawk Experience with her handler Chris O’Donnell.
Hawk experience even offers days where you can learn how to fly and handle these amazing birds at Warwick Castle! -Well we know where we’ll be heading to next…
We can only imagine the views that Nikita gets of Pen Y Ghent (we think the drone guys are a bit jealous)!
AccesstheDales
Later we met up with Debs from AccesstheDales who was looking super in her All-Terrain 4×4 Wheelchair, and she and Julia had a chat about accessible walking.
Find all of the wheel-friendly walks from Access The Dales on AccessTOG
“We’re delighted that AccesstheDales has joined forces with Julia Bradbury and The Outdoor Guide. Our continued aim is making the inaccessible accessible for as many people as possible. Working with TOG means we can pioneer even more new routes, create wheel-friendly walks for all ages and abilities and put together the perfect packages for people to get out and about.” – Debs
Day 4
We’re all feeling a bit nostalgic about the last time we were up here filming for Julia’s previous series where we were just half an hour away in Malham.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park has amazingly diverse walking experiences thanks to its range of landscapes.
Read more about the how National Parks UK look after these special places for us and for future generations.
But probably not the best place to visit if you’re into trainspotting…
Day 5
We finish our walk at the Pen Y Ghent Café where, (if you start here as well) you can use their clocking in and out service to record the time it takes for you to walk.
Do you have a ferret who you think is a winner?… Head to Pen Y Ghent Café to read the whole article and find out what fame could be in store for you and your furry friend!
We finished our last bit of filming at The Crown before ending our Yorkshire adventure with a cask ale in the lovely beer garden… no rain as of yet!
We are so excited to see how this episode turns out. Off to bed at The Traddock Hotel before we set off to our next location in the morning…
