Walk Overview
This short section of the 184-mile Thames Path National Trail follows the river from Putney Bridge to the Thames Barrier, passing many of London’s most famous landmarks.
Walkers can enjoy close-up views of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, The London Eye, Battersea Power Station, the Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, Canary Wharf and the London Docklands before finishing in Greenwich.
This is a long-ish walk of almost 20 miles, so make sure you’re fully prepared and take plenty of rest stops along the way. There are also plenty of accommodation options along the route if you fancy splitting the walk over a couple of days. This route follows the south bank of the Thames, but there are options to cross some of London’s many bridges if fancy a change of scenery on the north bank.
This route was voted 63rd in a 2017 ITV poll to find Britain’s Favourite Walk.
TOG VERDICT: London is an underrated walking destination. You won’t find solitude here, but you can’t beat it for history and the wow-factor of its cityscape.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
