Step back through the pages of history along the canal that turned the Midlands into an industrial boom area 200 years ago.
The Worcester and Birmingham Canal connected the Black Country to the sea by providing a link to the River Severn, opening trade routes to the world.
The canal bustled with barges carrying freight in and out night and day. Nowadays tourist boats keep the canals busy.
The walk covers 30 miles. We suggest doing it over two days. Gas Street Basin in central Birmingham is the start point. Heading out into rural Worcestershire you pass the famous Cadbury factory.
The 58 Tardebigge locks feature prominently on day two. Many of the desirable canal side apartments along the way once housed some of the porcelain factories that made Worcester famous.
The final half mile passes Lock number 1, the crucial link to the River Severn which made everything possible.
