Walk Details
One of the wonders of the natural world happens here in the United Kingdom every year and this is one of the best places to see it – the starling murmurations.
Our walk starts from the car park for Shapwick Heath and follows the path along the stream, westwards towards Avalon Marshes. Whilst our route finishes when you reach the road, all you need to do is turn around and retrace your steps back to your car.
Although many people flock here to watch the starlings roost, there is plenty of bird life to be seen all year round here – listen out for the distinctive boom of a bittern, the gentle call of chiffchaffs, the electric blue flash of a kingfisher or the graceful soar of marsh harriers overhead.
If you are going to see the starlings – please call the starling hotline on 07866 554142 to hear a recorded message on where they anticipate the starlings to roost (there is no guarantee though of where they will roost each night). The hotline operates from 1st November until 28th February each year. You should aim to be on site no later than 45 minutes before sunset to be in with a chance of seeing the starlings.
Read the Countryside Code before venturing out

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
