Walk Details
Hi, I’m Anna Reid, a PR from Devon. My spare time is spent searching for bunnies and fairies in the countryside with my daughters or hiking in beautiful Devon.
This walk has a jewel you won’t want to miss: the rugged beach of Wembury, with the uninhabited island, The Mewstone, jolting out of the sea. The walk has lots of fantastic views and culture points, so it’s perfect for children, though it’s not pram friendly, so it’s for keen able walkers or younger children that can be carried in slings.
You’ll find free parking in the heart of the village, where there’s a play park to top and tail the walk for extra energetic children.
Follow the map carefully away from the carpark and through the footpaths that skim the village.
As you head towards the sea, you’ll soon spot the ancient church which is worth exploring, inside and out, taking in the coastal views, before heading towards the beach.
You’ll pass Wembury Marine Centre which supports marine wildlife through education and engagement – a fantastic stop for children of all ages.
As you walk down the steps to the beach, you’ll pass the Old Mill Cafe, which is a perfect stop for a warm drink, a cool Devon cider or a light lunch.
The beach is stunning – when the tide is out, enjoy endless rock pools and softer sand. Each time you visit Wembury Beach, it changes form. The river meanders differently, the pebbles and sand shift. Dogs are welcome on the beach in the winter months.
Out ahead of you is The Mewstone, an island that is now a bird sanctuary but was formally a home to a prison and a refuge for smugglers.
As you look out to sea, turn left to continue along the South West Coast Path. As the map pulls you inland, you won’t be disappointed with the views as you hug the estuary.
Follow the tracks back towards your car, and if you’re not ready to leave this special village just yet, The Odd Wheel is a fantastic pub to stop in.
