Hello Toggers!

Backwards Walks
Walking backwards
In 1931 an American man called Plennie Wingo set off on a mission – to walk backwards around the world. He wore special glasses with mini mirrors attached so he could see where he was going and had a strong stick to aid his balance. In total he walked 7,000 miles and whilst you may think such a stunt would be the end of him – he actually lived to the grand old age of 98, claiming that walking backwards helped keep him healthy.

Now I’m not suggesting you go to such extremes as Plennie did, but there are benefits to walking backwards. A study in 2020 showed that walking backwards uses different sets of core and lower body muscles along with improving balance and stability. If you have knee problems – walking backwards up a hill can feel a lot easier on your joints.

Next month my new book, Hack Yourself Healthy, is published (more on that below) – and one of the tips I offer in it is to walk backwards. When you’re out on your next walk, or even just around your house or garden, why not give it a try!

Mam Tor and Great Ridge

Our walk this week is not only one of my favorites, it’s also one of the nations having come 10th in a poll of Britain’s Favourite Walks. In the heart of the Peak District you’ll find Mam Tor. This is a technically simple walks that, on a fine day, offers breathtaking views out across the country’s oldest National Park.

We love staying at Bike & Boot in the Peak District – described as the ultimate leisure hotel for the 21st century and is perfect for walkers. There’s a boot room, a dog grooming room and free tea & cakes at teatime for guests – just what you need after a day on the hills!

Hack Yourself Happy – book tour

Hack Yourself Happy Tour
When I heard the words “you have cancer” everything changed for me. Following my mastectomy and being given the all clear – I have put myself forward as a test subject for cutting edge science, ancient healing practices and natural remedies to see what really does work. My latest book, Hack Yourself Healthy, which is published next month, shares some of the discoveries that I’ve made.

I’m excited to share my findings with you – which is why I’m embarking on a book tour starting in Oswestry on Monday 15th September. It will be an opportunity to listen to me talk about the journey I’ve been on and get your copy of the book signed. Full details of where I’ll be and when are on The Outdoor Guide website.
