Walk Overview
This walk follows the Llangollen Canal through tunnels and over aqueducts along the Welsh-English border from Llangollen to Chirk.
The route crosses the world-famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, an 18-arched stone and cast iron structure that carries the canal across the River Dee.
Known as ‘the stream in the sky’, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct World Heritage Site is the centrepiece of this magical walk that covers around 9 miles on the border between two countries, over two aqueducts and through two tunnels.
The mixture of picturesque countryside and impressive engineering gives the Llangollen Canal walk a unique feel, and as the route is almost all on canal towpaths the vast majority is wheelchair and pushchair friendly.
You’ll pass Chirk Marina and the magnificent National trust property of Chirk Castle as you near the finish of the walk in the small town of Chirk, where you can catch a boat or train back to your start point in Llangollen.
This route was voted 60th in a 2017 ITV poll to find Britain’s Favourite Walk.
TOG VERDICT: A wonderful waterway walk on towpaths, over aqueducts and through tunnels – with Pontcysyllte as the unforgettable standout attraction.
