Broughton Sanctuary in Skipton is a perfect holiday destination for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and explore the stunning landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District. With its extensive walking trails, beautifully appointed self-carting holiday homes, and close proximity to iconic day-trip destinations, the Sanctuary offers a unique and memorable experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, an adventurous hiking holiday, or a bit of both, Broughton Sanctuary provides the perfect base for your next countryside escape.
Broughton Sanctuary itself offers an abundance of walking opportunities without ever needing to get in the car. Guests can put on the hiking boots and explore the Sanctuary’s well-maintained trails from the doorstep of their self-catering Holiday Home. A dedicated 30 Kilometre Odyssey Trail around the 3,000 acres is accessible to guests staying in the Holiday Homes. Allocated into five interconnecting loops, Odyssey is specifically designed as a journey for mind, body and spirit. The trails wind through ancient woodland, open fields, and alongside peaceful streams. The Sanctuary is also home to a variety of wildlife, making it a great location for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
One of the highlights of the Sanctuary is the Rewilding Project, which focuses on restoring natural habitats and promoting biodiversity. As part of the rewilding efforts, guests may spot deer, hares, otters, polecats, owls, kestrels and a variety of other bird species while exploring the grounds. The Sanctuary also features meditation spaces, tree nets, and viewing platforms, providing unique spots to rest and take in the serene surroundings. You can even go wild swimming and warm up in a woodland sauna.
In 2024 Broughton Sanctuary was included in the prestigious National Geographic Cool List as one of the top destinations to visit. Since 2020, over 320,000 trees have been planted, creating new woodlands and enhancing biodiversity. Guests can walk through these newly planted areas and observe the positive impact of rewilding efforts first hand. The Sanctuary is also home to Iron Age Pigs and Riggit Galloway Cattle, both of which play a key role in habitat restoration. In 2025, the rewilding project will take another significant step forward with the planned introduction of beavers, further enriching the natural landscape and creating opportunities for wildlife to thrive.
