SALEWA

Engineered in the Dolomites, at home anywhere.
SALEWA was born from mountaineers looking for something different. We strived for better equipment – and so we started making our own. Times have changed, and so have the needs of mountaineers. But our passion is the same. The Salewa story started on July 8, 1935, when Josef Liebhart, the director of Munich´s cooperative for saddlers and tapestry handlers registered a sister corporation for saddler and leather wares: Sa (sattler / saddler) Le (leder / leather) Wa (waren / wares). Twenty years later, SALEWA developed the unique andes backpack and supported the Andes expedition of Hermann Huber, who was to become the managing director of Salewa.

Over the next two decades, SALEWA continued to make it’ mark on the Mountaineering community, pioneering the development and production of the first, fully adjustable crampon, the tubular ice screw, locking carabiner and Sticht plate. In short, the keystone items of equipment required by any alpinist then and to this day.

Continuing in it’s quest for better equipment and the provision of innovative solutions, in 2017, SALEWA introduced the use of Tirolwool® Responsive Technology in our insulation jackets. Tirolwool® Responsive is a natural product that is sourced from tyrolean and south tyrolean mountain sheep farms. Using this to replace all synthetic fills. In addition, we harness the benefits of the natural performance fibre hemp. Our proprietary Alpine Hemp Technology is particularly environmentally friendly. The fabric is known for its hardwearing character and pleasant feel next to skin. Our Alpine Hemp products have been available commercially since 2018.

Today, SALEWA is now a world leader in alpine products, present in 30 countries and supplies to some 2,500 shops around the globe. Offering Mountaineers a head to toe equipment solution for their chosen discipline whether that be Trekking & Hiking, Alpinism, Rock Climbing & Speed Hiking.
