Walk details

This short circular walk up Cochrane Pike is a great place to spot the impressive birdlife of Northumberland National Park. 

On the edge edge of the wild and remote-feeling Cheviot Hills, this 4.1-mile route is the perfect choice if you have a morning or afternoon to spare. Easy to access from Alnwick and the nearby A697 road, there are parking and toilet facilities at the start of the route.

The main features of the walk are the Bronze Age burials at Turf Knowe, but the birdlife can’t be missed as you’ll often hear curlews, oystercatchers and skylarks, with kestrels and red kites soaring above you as you walk.

The landscape is rolling and the views are spectacular, and if you’re lucky you’ll have the whole place to yourself.
