Walk Details

A circular walk with a mix of waterside and dense woodland terrain (especially along the western shore), and a favourite for families and walkers of all abilities. Nestled in the serene Goyt Valley, Fernilee Reservoir is the lower of the valley’s two reservoirs, with Errwood Reservoir positioned upstream closer to Buxton.

This leisurely 3.25-mile route loops around the reservoir, offering a gentle walk suitable for all ages, though it isn’t ideal for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

The combination of waterside views, charming woodland trails, and the peaceful atmosphere makes this walk perfect for a refreshing day out in nature. Through the woodland you will walk and find beautiful ferns, tall conifers as well as prehistoric looking moss covered walls and stones.

The reservoir was built in the 1930’s to provide drinking water to Stockport. Built on the destroyed village of Goyt’s Bridge, stone walls and the outlines of buildings can be seen in times of extreme dryness and drought.

Fernilee is 2.5miles south of the small town of Whaley Bridge, just off the A5004.

Whilst this is an easy walk, it is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
