Walk Details
Located on the edge of the Somerset town of Chard, this is a lovely walk that is suitable for all. As a local nature reserve, there are 88 acres of open water, woodland and meadows that can be enjoyed by all.
The walk starts from the car park on Oaklands Avenue. From here follow the path, across the grass until you come to a gate.
There are several gates on this walk – all of them are open and just need to be pushed to open.
Crossing the lane, go through another gate and then follow the path to the left, eventually walking in amongst the trees. To start with, we’re going to continue round to the left and head towards the hide (this is only open until 3pm daily) to take a moment to observe the wildlife that calls this place home.
When you’re ready we retrace our steps for a short while. At a sign we continue right and follow the path around the edge of the reservoir, through the trees. Whilst dogs are welcome here – they do need to be kept on a lead.
The path is a gravel track that is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs – although tree routes cause some obstacles along the way (but can be overcome with relative ease).
There are some beach areas along the edge of the reservoir that can be accessed – there is a step down to each of them. If you have little ones with you – please keep a close eye on them by the waters edge.
At the far end it is then possible to join the old railway to complete a loop of the full reservoir. In the summer of 2025 – this is not possible however as work is being done on the dam wall. If this is still the case when you visit – when you reach the far end of the reservoir you will need to turn around and retrace your steps back the way you have come.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
