If you’re feeling energetic you can extend the route along the long sweep of Embleton Sands to Low Newton-by-the-Sea, or simply follow your footsteps back towards Craster from Dunstanburgh Castle – a pretty fishing port famous for its kippers.
Dunstanburgh Castle was built in 1313 and stands on a remote headland on a wave-battered coastline, with its great twin-towered keep still clearly visible despite much of the fortress now being in disrepair.
This is a great walk all year round, with blooming flowers in spring, rock pools to explore in summer, migrating birds in autumn and quiet paths in winter.
This route was voted ninth in a 2017 ITV poll to find Britain’s Favourite Walk.
