Walk details

Starting and finishing in Keswick, this circular walk up the small peak of Latrigg visits one of the best viewpoints in the Lake District National Park.

As you ascend from the busy market town of Keswick towards the 368m summit of Latrigg, you’ll be treated to beautiful scenery stretching across Derwent Water and most of the northern fells.

With the huge sprawling peak of Skiddaw to the north providing an impressive backdrop to the whole route, this is a walk you’ll want to do again and again.

The climb is quite long and gradual, but you can easily pack it into a morning or afternoon with plenty of time to stop for a snack on the summit and admire one of England’s finest views from the summit.

This route also takes you alongside some of the old railway line that once connected the Cumbrian towns of Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith.

The trainline – along with the glorious Lakeland landscape – was partly responsible for turning Keswick into a thriving Victorian tourist resort.

You end the walk back in Keswick, where we recommend the chippy in the town square, the pasty shop just round the corner, and pub grub in either the Dog & Gun or the Wainwright Inn.

TOG VERDICT
You can’t visit Keswick without doing this walk. It’s short and simple with spectacular scenery, plus great pubs at the end of it!
