If there’s one name that is synonymous with the Lake District it’s Alfred Wainwright and his pictorial guides of Lakeland Fells that have inspired many to visit and explore for themselves.
This walk takes you up Castle Crags. It may be one of the smaller fells but is certainly one of the jewels in the Borrowdale Valley.
We’re starting at Grange and following the edge of the river southwards, through the woodland, past the National Trust campsite at Hollows Farm. Keep following the path south up the Old Quarry Road and then take a left turn up the short but sharp cragside.
Keep following the zigzag path until you reach the professional made summit cairn – keeping an eye out for the Herdwick sheep and some caves as you go.
Our walk finishes on the summit of Castle Crag. From here you will either need to retrace your steps or consult your trusty map to take you onwards to your next destination.
This walk featured in the BBC series Wainwright Walks which Julia presented.
