Walk Details
If there’s one walk that is on the bucket list for keen walkers in the UK, it’s probably this one – the famed Coast to Coast trail that was formed by Alfred Wainwright. In 2004 a group of hiking experts ranked this walk as the second best in the world – ahead of climbing Everest or walking the Inca Trail in Peru.
Starting in St Bees on the west coast, we traverse the country until, around 190 miles later, we find ourselves at Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast.
This is a walk that will take you through not one, not two but three national parks.
The Lake District segment of the walk takes in high mountains, low valleys and the beautiful lakes. Get ready for some steep climbs that offer spectacular views. The highest point of the whole walk is Kidsty Pike at 780m.
The Yorkshire Dales offers mixed and varied scenery that easily rival that of the Lakes but without the hefty climbs.
The North York Moors offer a sense of seclusion with the largest area of upland heather moorland in the country.
On average, it takes around 16 days to complete the full trail, walking around 12-14 miles a day. This is a walk that is very much open to the elements, often walking along secluded, boulder strewn paths, steep climbs and descents and bogs in some areas. You need to make sure you’re prepared for all weathers and conditions!
Don’t forget to grab your Coast to Coast Passport before setting off!

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
