Route Overview
At 24 miles long, Loch Lomond is the largest loch in Scotland by surface area. This walk featured in Julia’s series of Britain’s Best Walks – and with the views out across the loch it’s easy to understand why.
Our walk starts at the picnic spot just north of Arrochymore Point. From here we pick up the West Highland Way heading south. As we come to Cragie Fort we head up to get a great view in all directions of the surrounding countryside and out across Loch Lomond.
As we get into Balmaha we take a ferry out to the ancient Lomond isle of Inchcailloch. Each season brings something different to this part of the walk – bluebells in the spring, wealth of bird and plant life in the summer and migrating waders in the autumn and winter.
Heading back across to the mainland we head into Balmaha where our walk ends. Here we recommend getting some locally made ice cream – well you deserve it after that walk!

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
