Walk Overview
The chalk stacks of Old Harry off the Studland coastline are one of the most famous landmarks along the Jurassic Coast. This circular walk is a great way to see not only Old Harry but also, on a clear day, out across the bay towards the Needles off the Isle of Wight in one direction and the Purbeck Hills in another.
We start in the village of Studland and head off along the coastline towards Old Harry. The wide-open space is great for dogs to run free.

As you reach Old Harry you’ll want to pause for a moment or two to admire the view out across towards Poole. Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight.
When you’re ready, continue up on to Ballard Down. From here you get another great view – this time looking down over the town of Swanage, a quintessential British seaside town (where you may want to go after for some fish and chip on the beach).
If you’ve brought a picnic with you – this is a great place to pause to enjoy it – especially on a fine weather day. When it’s the Swanage Carnival and they have a flying display – you’ll find many people come here to watch as it’s a great vantage point (especially if the Red Arrows are displaying).
When you’re ready, we’re heading inland and downwards, towards Dean Hill before sweeping back around, heading northwards towards Poole Harbour. As you approach the chain ferry you’ll take a right turn across Studland Heath and onto the golden sandy beach.
Here you pick up the South West Coast Path, heading south and back towards Studland where we began our walk. Studland village is home to a number of great cafes, pubs and restaurants where walkers are very much welcome for some refreshments after a wonderful walk with awesome views!
