Walk Details
Just south of Swanage is the stunning Durlston Country Park. There are plenty of paths you can take to explore this corner of Dorset – many of which are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Our walk today is taking us towards the lighthouse.
We’re starting at the car park and heading west before taking a left towards the coast.

This takes us down towards the Lighthouse. Whilst only a short distance, it is a bit steep – if you are a wheelchair user you may wish to borrow the All Terrain Wheelchair from the Visitor Centre (located at Durlston Castle) to make getting back up again easier!
The lighthouse, which now houses two holiday cottages, was built in 1881. It stands 12m tall and light is positioned to give a waypoint for vessels passing along the English Channel coast.
Take a moment to pause to not only admire the view but also spot the wildlife that lives along the Jurassic coastline here. There are plenty of sea birds and, if you’re lucky, you may spot a dolphin or porpoise out at sea.
Our walk ends at the lighthouse. From here you can either retrace your steps or follow one of the other paths back towards where you started.
Access TOG’s Verdict:
The views from the lighthouse are simply breathtaking! It is a steep climb back up the path – but the two All Terrain Wheelchairs that are available to use, with thanks to South West Mobility, make it so much easier for everyone to enjoy!
