Exploring the great outdoors
Over the other side of “the pond”, our friends in America have designated June as Great Outdoors Month. In truth, we think every month is Great Outdoors Month – but we’ll take any opportunity to celebrate being outside!
In the US, the month is about celebrating the diverse environments that the country has to offer – but as the recent BBC One series, Wild Britain, has shown – although we may be just a fraction of the size of the US, we have a great variety of environments across our own shores too. Whether it’s the dramatic mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the lowland fells of the Lake District, the expansiveness of the Highlands or the layers of history in the Jurassic coastline – there’s something there for everyone!
And showing how the great outdoors is for everyone is something really important to us here at The Outdoor Guide. Perhaps you can’t walk far or are a wheelchair user. Maybe you have a young family and need to take a pushchair with you. That’s not a problem – we have a selection of walks that you’ll be able to enjoy too.
Our recommendations of the week
In the footsteps of pilgrims
If you’re looking for a challenge – this might be it. Starting on the outskirts of Galashiels, this 100km walk will weave you through beautiful and varied countryside through to Holy Island off the Northumberland coast. It’s recommended to take 4-6 days to do this walk.
Dinner with a view
After a days walking there can be no finer view than from the Chough’s Nest overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the coast path, just outside Lynton and Lynmouth, it’s a great base for exploring the North Devon coastline and Exmoor National Park.
