Walk Overview
This popular Peak District walk explores the limestone gorge of Dovedale and its famous stepping stones before finishing in the pretty village of Milldale.
Dovedale can be incredibly busy in the spring and summer months but don’t let that put you off – the crowds come here because it’s such a beautiful place to walk.
This three-mile route follows the River Dove through a luscious green valley, passing all of Dovedale’s most famous features.
If the river is low enough you can cross Dovedale’s picturesque stepping stones and climb the limestone reef knoll of Thorpe Cloud, a perfect small hill for families to explore with great views from its pointy 287m summit. As you follow the wildlife-rich river up the valley you’ll pass through ancient ash woodlands, with spectacular rock formations and spires lining the horizon above the valley.
Milldale is a picture-perfect stone village and a great place to end the walk, but if you’re feeling energetic why not turn around and explore Dovedale again from the other direction?
This route was voted 26th in a 2017 ITV poll to find Britain’s Favourite Walk.
TOG VERDICT: Dovedale is perfect for walkers of all ages to explore, with its beautiful river, ancient woodlands, great wildlife and spectacular rock formations.
