Walk Details
A typical Dales village, Gunnerside has a rich history of hill farming and was a major lead mining site up until the late 19th century. The village itself has a couple of cafes and a pub that welcome walkers and perfect for a post walk refreshment.
Our walk begins in the village – we’re taking the road that leads from the green between the houses.
It’s a gentle climb upwards and offers wonderful views over Swaledale pretty early on. Keep going along this road and take the shooters track on your right which will take us all the way to the top of Rogan’s Seat.
You need to pay close attention as you get towards the top as the summit is easy to miss (it’s denoted by a small pile of stones and a plastic tube!) – but the views are worth it! When you’re ready – it’s time to head back down to the village and that well earned pint or cuppa!
Rogan’s Seat is one of the Dales 30. For more information about the others please click here.
Access TOG Verdict:
Whilst none of the cafes or pub in the village are wheelchair friendly – but on fair weather days there are plenty of places to sit outside and enjoy your refreshments. There are accessible loos (RADAR) in the village too.
The track for this walk is well maintained and in good repair. That said – it’s not suitable for manual wheelchairs. You are going to want an all terrain 4×4 for this one as it is a long climb to the top.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
