Getting ready for winter walks
The clocks have changed, bonfire night has been and gone, the shops are full of festive cheer – before you know it winter will be with us again. There’s something magical about going out for a stroll on a winters day. Getting wrapped up, donning your walking boots and stepping out into the crisp air.
For some though it can be a struggle to venture outside during the winter months. But TOG blogger, Annie Button, has provided us with her top tips to inspire you to get outside. You can read them on the TOG blog.
Weekend Walks
This week we’re headed up to the Lake District to do the Coffin Route from Ambleside to Grasmere. Don’t be put off by the name – this is a beautiful 3 mile wander through the woodland that runs alongside Rydal Water and Grasmere. The route follows the medieval road that took corpses from Ambleside to their final resting place at St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere.
The Ambleside Inn is a short walk from the start of this walk and a great place not only for a bite to eat and something to quench the thirst – but also to stay the night too. They’ve been offering a warm welcome to Lakeland walkers for over 300 years.
Giving the gift of outdoor play
What originated in the US to counter the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday has now become a global movement for good. It’s an opportunity to give, be it time, money or support, to charitable causes. If, like us, you’re passionate about time spent outdoors – why not consider helping more primary school children get outdoors?
The Outdoor Guide Foundation was set up to help make the outdoors accessible to all – and that starts with children. Our Waterproof & Wellies campaign aims to provide 10 sets of waterproof jackets, trousers and wellington boots to every state primary school in the country.
Support your local community
It’s not just individuals who can support the campaign – businesses can too. Huge thanks go to Stephen Sanderson Transport Ltd who last week joined our MD, Gina at Corby Old Village Primary School, local to their head office to donate 10 sets of Waterproofs & Wellies.
Don’t get SAD
With the nights drawing in, darker days, colder temperatures and less sunlight can have an impact on your mental health and well-being. It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder and is experienced by 3% of the UK population. It’s something that Julia talks about in her latest book, Walk Yourself Happy. If you’re one those who are impacted from this – never fear! We’re here to help! Read our blog on 6 ways you can overcome it.
Hot off the press!
