So, what is 100% green gas and why are 100Green the only supplier to offer it?

Green gas is made through a process known as anaerobic digestion – in fact the process also creates renewable electricity. Put simply, the energy is created when natural, organic waste decomposes – waste like cow poo or food scraps. The gasses that are released are captured and either purified so they can go straight into the gas grid or fed into an engine that creates electricity.

It’s pretty amazing stuff. He uses the waste from his dairy farm to make electricity and heat to power his cheese making and farming.

Every kWh of green gas that 100Green buys is certified by the Green Gas Certification Scheme. This proves its origin. It also means that unlike many other suppliers in the industry, 100 Green are prepared to only grow as fast as their green credentials will allow and therefore remain a small, independent and family run business.  And that’s probably one of the reasons why 100Green are the only supplier willing to offer 100% green gas.

Taking the meaning of green even further

Even the generation of green energy can have a negative impact on the environment.

Take for example wind turbines or solar panels. They are all manufactured somewhere, and they take up valuable green spaces. Similarly, hydroelectricity plants can disrupt the habitats that naturally form in flowing streams and rivers.

That’s why 100Green offer EKO energy. The energy in this tariff has met stricter sustainability criteria than industry regulations require.

The wind farms 100Green buy electricity from cannot be located near protected areas like nature reserves or be in the path of migrating birds. Hydroelectricity must come from generators where fish migration paths are not impacted. And all green gas must come from naturally occurring waste rather than energy crops specifically grown to make energy.
