Accessible to all
Did you know that today, 16th May, is Accessibility Awareness Day?
If there’s one thing that we’re passionate about at TOG (other than simply being out in nature) it’s showcasing how the great outdoors can be accessible to everyone. Whether you’re wheelchair bound or only able to walk short distances – we can help show you some extraordinary parts of the country you perhaps otherwise thought inaccessible for you.
We work with a number of amazing partners who share this passion for getting everyone outdoors – and this week we want to showcase some of them to you.
Exploring the Dales
The Yorkshire Dales offers some amazing accessible walks – and that’s where we’re headed this week. We’re headed to Great Shunner Fell – the third highest peak in Yorkshire. It is rocky terrain so if you are a wheelchair user – you’ll need an all terrain chair (read on for more about the amazing ones available!). Weather permitting the views from the top are amazing!
We’re going to be staying at Cottage in the Dales. With fully accessible accommodation options, a stay here offers a touch of luxury as standard.
Explore the rugged terrain
For those who need to use a wheelchair, your outdoor adventures don’t have to stop at the end of the paved path. With an all terrain, powered chair you have the ability to explore much further afield. The partners we work with, including All Terrain Wheelchairs, Dietz Mobility, Mountain Trike and TerrainHopper, excel at helping you go beyond where your manual chair will take you.
Keeping warm and dry
As the saying goes – there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Whilst that maybe true – it can be a challenge to get the right kit to keep you dry if you’re a wheelchair user or have a pushchair. That’s where Bundle Bean come in. Created from a desire to find something practical and durable to keep you dry whilst also adding an element of fun through the funky designs. The range include covers for pushchairs and wheelchairs along with ponchos for adults and children.
Enabling outdoor play
Accessibility is more than just physical. There are other factors which can limit or prohibit your access to the outdoors. With roughly one third of all primary school aged children living below the poverty line in the UK, there is little money available for the basics, let alone the right kit to enable outdoor play in all weather. We launched the Waterproof & Wellies campaign to do something about this. Our mission is to provide every state primary school with 10 sets of waterproof jackets, trousers and wellington boots so every child, no matter their background, can play outside.
