Walk Details

This is a great circular walk, starting and finishing at the Rathdrum Rail Station and takes you to the home of the Irish Forestry Movement – Avondale Forest Park.

Our walk takes us along the banks of the Avondale River, the melodic sound of the water accompanying us on every step. As we enter the Avondale Forest Park itself we’re following the marked path of the “River Trail”. This is a nature lover’s dream!

There will be more than one tree that you’ll want to pause for a moment with, perhaps hug, and just imagine the stories that they could tell. Some of these gentle giants are believed to be over 300 years old. That said – this trail is not a walk in the park.

This segment of our walk is 5km in length and includes some challenging and steep climbs and descents. You’ll need some good sturdy footwear for this one! Rest assured though – the effort is well worth it as you are rewarded with breathtaking views out across the meandering river, surrounded by the luscious green of the forests.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
