Walk Description
If you are a wheelchair user, have a double pushchair or if there has been heavy rain which has caused the River Sowe to burst its banks – then this is the walk for you.
From the Family Hub we turn right and head along Middle Rise towards the Eureka Nursery (on our right). Taking care to cross over the road, we are heading to the path that crosses the grassed area in front of us. We follow the path, round to our left, until we reach St James Lane.
Here we use the pedestrian crossing to safely get to the other side. We turn left and then take the first right onto Remembrance Road, turning immediately to our right on to Meadfoot Road. Care should be taken along here as cars may be parked partially across the pavement.
At the end of the road we cut through to a footpath alongside some pylons that runs parallel to the railway line (there is no dropped curb in some parts – so please take care). As we follow the path down, we go under the railway line and then around to the left. At the bollard we turn right and head up towards the main road. We follow the footpath that takes us past Corpus Christi – first it is the social club (where there are plans to host some drop in sessions), the church and then the primary school.
Past the school, we follow the footpath that goes across the grassy area towards the left. We eventually cross the River Sowe and then come to Allard Way (quite a busy road). We go through the underpass to cross the road – on the left keep an eye out for a plaque that commemorates the filming of the 1969 classic film, The Italian Job. The scene of the Mini driving through the sewers of Turin – that was actually filmed right here in Coventry. A new sewer system was being installed in the city and, before it was commissioned into use, it was used to film those now infamous scenes. Who knew you had such an iconic film location right here on your doorstep!
We follow the footpath to our left, heading up from the underpass and walking alongside Allard Way. This is a very busy road and care should be taken. We’re following the road to the end, where we come to a big roundabout and an ASDA supermarket in front of us. Here we need to cross over Allard Way (to our left). There isn’t a pedestrian crossing so you do need to take extra care here. There are dropped curbs and a central place to wait and cross in two stages if necessary.
From here we’re turning left and walking along London Road (the road sign is directing you towards Willenhall). This is a road bordered by mature trees. We cross over the River Sowe (you’ll see signs pointing you to a footpath that runs alongside the river). We continue on and turn left onto Chase Avenue.
On our left you will see a medical centre (Kenyon Medical Centre) and pharmacy. From here you could continue straight along Chase Avenue – you’d go past a Police Station (now closed) and St Anne’s Primary School and take you on a slightly longer walk to where we’re headed next. For a shorter route, we’re turning right onto Stretton Avenue and go past Stretton Church of England Academy (on our right), crossing over Dunsmore Avenue until we reach the junction with Robin Hood Road.
This is where the longer walk rejoins us. If we were to go left here, we could then take a right and find ourselves in Rock Spinney. It’s a great park with a playground for the children to enjoy and plenty of green spaces for dogs to have a good run about. In heavy rain, it can get waterlogged. We however are turning right onto Robin Hood Road.
Here we come to the Betty Ennis Foundation Centre – home to drop in sessions, a food bank and social supermarket. There is also a parade of shops which include a supermarket, pharmacy and post office. Next up, on the left, is Willenhall Dental Centre, followed by St John the Divine’s church on our right. Continuing on we see Willenhall Social Club on our left before we reach the end of the road. We turn left onto St James Lane and then a right onto Middle Rise, following the road round until we find ourselves back at the Family Hub. Pop in for a warm welcome and hot drink before continuing on with your day.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
