Walk Description
In the heart of the city, there’s a hidden gem that you’ll find on this great circular walk!
We start from the front door of Harmony Family Hub and turn right and then take a left into the pedestrianised area – going diagonally across it onto Victoria Street and turning right. On the right is Sidney Stringer Primary School, on the left Sidney Stringer Academy with St Peters Church behind it. The road becomes Primrose Hill Street. On the right you will see Swanswell Recreation Ground – which we’re headed into. We take the path through the park, with the pond to our left.
We leave the park and come out onto the Stoney Stanton Road. Take care as we cross the road and head right, past the walk in medical centre (on our left). We continue up to the lights with the Corner Stone Methodist Church and take a left onto Howard Street. We walk along here until we come to a traffic roundabout with a Catholic Church ahead of us and the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash temple to our right.
From here we’re taking the second road on the right (or third exit from the roundabout as if you were driving!) onto Leicester Causeway, walking past the car park to the temple. We then take a right onto Eagle Street with playing fields to our right and a Gospel Hall. Here we turn left onto George Street and walk past the Jamia Mosque and then John Gulson Primary School on our left.
At the end of George Street we find ourselves back on Leicester Causeway with the hidden gem of Coventry ahead of us – the Coventry Canal. There’s a lovely mosaic of a canal boat on the wall and we walk along to our right until we see the blue arch that enables us to join the tow path. This is where our walk touches the walk from Families for All Family Hub walk – if you’d like a longer walk you could combine the two! The canal tow path isn’t suitable for double buggies or wheelchair users. If this is you turn right onto the Stoney Stanton Road and then take the first left onto Cambridge Street. At the end of the road, turn left onto Harnall Street East where you will pick this route back up again.
We get onto the canal tow path and turn right and go under the bridge (Stoney Stanton Road) and continue walking along. You’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re in the heart of Coventry along here. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife who call this canal home – and make sure any little ones with you stay away from the edge of the water.
We come to some blue railings that offer a way off the tow path. There are some steps down here so take care, especially if it has been raining. Here we find ourselves on Freehold Street. On the left there’s a small playground area for the little ones to enjoy, overlooked by a mural of a local boy who is sadly no longer with us. Further along the road there’s a community centre on the left and an islamic centre on the right. When we reach Harnall Street East, we turn left and then take a right down King Edward Road.
We turn left onto Alexandra Road and then right onto Coronation Road until we reach Berry Street. Turning left, there’s Primrose Hill Park on the left with a small playground area. Opposite the entrance to the park, we take a right turn along Vauxhall Street and past Mosaic Church. Following the road round we come to Weavers Park on the left, a small grassed area that pays homage to the former industries of the city. Just beyond this is a community centre and the Living Sanctuary Church.
Where the road turns round to the left, we turn right and follow the footpath past the end of the row of terraced houses. We go past the Positive Youth Foundation and then join Waterloo Street to continue straight on until we meet King William Street, with Hillfields Church on the right. We turn left here, noticing St Mary & St Benedict Catholic Primary School on the opposite side of the road.
As we come to a mini traffic roundabout, we see the Redeemed Christian Church of God on the right. We go right onto Clifton Street and then take the first left onto Albert Street and back to where we started, at the Harmony Family Hub. The hub is a great place for a hot drink, a warm welcome and a team that will do their best to help you.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
