Cumbria: the High Cup Nick Walk
High Cup Nick has been called the Grand Canyon of the Pennines and northern England’s most glorious landscape feature.
Our walk starts in Dufton and takes us up onto the Pennine Way as we start our ascent up to the summit of High Cup Nick.
Once you’ve taken a moment or two to admire the view from up here we can start our descent down the glaciated vale of High Cup Gill.
It’s a slightly gentler on the knees than the way up. When we reach High Cup House, we turn right and follow the road back into Dufton where we began.
This walk featured in Julia’s series of Best Walks With a View where she met a family of rake makers and learnt about the traditional craft. These were the rakes used in the London 2012 Olympics! She also got to taste the produce at the High Cup Nick winery before encountering the famous Helm wind that roars across the surrounding hills.
This is one of the highlights of the Pennine Way and was described by Wainwright as an ‘unforgettable sight’ and a ‘natural wonder’. The perfect location to sample the local Ale!

What a difference a week makes. Still in Cumbria but the sun is shining and the sky is blue. Just as well as this …

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
