Walk Details
The Calf is the highest peak in the Howgill Fells and Cautley Spout is the highest above ground waterfall in England, giving you two spectacular landmarks in one wonderful hill walk.

The Howgills are Cumbria’s best kept secret, tucked away in their own secluded pocket between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, and are perfect for walkers who enjoy solitude.

Starting near the Cross Keys pub and crossing the River Rothay before approaching Cautley Spout along the wide valley cut by Cautley Holme Beck, this is a beautiful route with a grand mountainous feel to it.

You’ll climb steeply alongside the cascades of Cautley Spout and although the path to the Calf isn’t obvious from the top of the waterfall, you’ll get there easily by following the right-hand bank of Swere Gill before joining the main path to the summit.

The distinctive white trig point marking the Calf’s 676m high point delivers knockout views across the Lakes and Dales and out to the west coast, so take plenty of photos before retracing your steps to your start point, with more great views down Cautley Holme Beck on the descent.

TOG rating: One of the finest hill walks you’ll find anywhere in England – and the best thing is, hardly anyone knows it exists!
