Walk Details
Our walk starts in the Millpool car park in Looe. From the car park, we’re walking alongside the waterside and into the forest. When you reach the road, we’re turning left and continuing on for around 250 metres before bearing right onto the public footpath (the sign reads Watergate 1 1/4m, Giant’s Hedge walk).
Keep right on this path until you reach a junction – continue straight on (ignoring the path going up to your left) until you reach a fork.
Here we bear left to go past a small footbridge and steps on the right. At the next junction we’re following the sign to “Watergate” (there are blue and red dots marking the way – ignore the alternate yellow route). This path has some ups and downs so get ready to work those leg muscles! At the second junction we’re following the red marking dot (ignoring the alternative blue dotted route) and follow a narrow steep path which goes under some power lines. When we finally reach a signpost and two blocks of stones we’re following the “Watergate ½” sign to go past those blocks until we come to the Giant’s Hedged, stone-faced earth banks that date back to the sixth century.
The path from here leads us to the road, past a gate. Go down and towards the right to enter the village and then turn right to join the public footpath close to the river. Here you may notice a signpost for Kilminorth woods). The path from here takes us along the West Looe river for around one mile, following signs to Looe. Be careful with the tides on this path – at high tide you may need to take an alternative route to prevent getting wet feet on a flooded path! Based on the tide – you can go past close to the stairs on your right or go down the stairs from the alternative route. Keep following the signs towards Looe. You’ll go past a picnic area to join a paved road. Continue straight towards Looe, going past a wide gate until you reach the road that takes you back to Millpool Car Park where we started.
