Polruan Walk

Walk Details

This is a lovely circular walk that offers views out across the estuary to Fowey.

At the junction we cross over the road and go through the gate, before turning left along a narrow path.

It’s a bit twisty this path but we’re soon at the Pont Pill valley. We need to keep to the left, cross a small stream before we join the surfaced roadway and continue on for a short distance. We’re then taking the path on the left and continuing along the path towards Polruan.

There are splendid views across the water to Fowey and welcoming seats before you start heading down to Polruan. When you’re ready to move on from here, please be careful and watch your step as we go down several flights of steps. Once at the harbour, you might want to stop at The Lugger Inn, for a rest and a cuppa … or perhaps something stronger to give you the energy for the return leg of the walk!

Feeling refreshed, we head back to West Street and follow the “Coast Path and Blockhouse” sign, on a path that offers views over the estuary and passing by a church.

We then take a left at Battery Lane and continue straight ahead at the junction, passing Headland Garden. At the “coast path, public footpath, Polperro 6 1⁄2 miles” sign, we’re turning left.

Once we get to Polruan, we pass another coast path sign and turn right. Going past the car park, a coast guard building until we come to a gate, where, at the suburbanised ‘St. Saviour’s Tower’ we turn right.

We need to go left through a gate and continue along the coast path. At the fork, we keep walking with the sea to our right. At the next significant fork, we keep right, and go down a few steps to a little gate.

After what is the longest and hardest ascent of the route, there is a farm gate on the right; the coast path continues through the gate. Here we turn left to leave the coast path and walk along the top of a sloping meadow. There is a “Pencarrow car park 1⁄4 mile” sign. On approaching the road, we go right, through a little gate, and follow a roadside path as far as the junction. Cross the road and we find ourselves back at the car park where we started.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
