Exploring the Peaks
The Peak District was the first designated national park in Great Britain. It’s designation came on 17th April 1951 and paved the way for the other 14 that have followed across England, Scotland and Wales.
It’s fair to say that the Peak District is a walkers paradise – it’s little wonder that the top selling Ordnance Survey OS Explorer Maps each year are generally Dark Peak and White Peak. The whole park covers an area of 555 square miles across six different counties.
A stroll around Ladybower Reservoir
This week our walk has been recommended to us by one of our TOGGERS – Phil Sproson. It’s a gentle walk on well made paths that takes us around the Ladybower Reservoir that was where test flights were made for the now famous Dambuster raids during the second world war.
After our 5 mile walk we’re heading just a short distance to the newly opened Bike & Boot Peak District Hotel. We’re huge fans of these hotels that have been described as “a new leisure hotel brand fit for the 21st century”. There’s a designated space for you to clean down your muddy walking boots, complimentary afternoon tea and cake and a film club showcasing some of the latest releases.
Putting your best foot forward
Having the right footwear can make all the difference when you’re going out for a walk. We’re proud to work with Cotswold Shoes who are passionate about creating sustainable, durable, versatile and comfortable footwear ready for your outdoor adventures. They have a great range suitable for all the family.
Urban adventures
Going out for a walk doesn’t mean you have to be out in the countryside – there are some great urban walks waiting for you to enjoy them. The Regents Canal walk in central London is one great example. A nine mile walk along the towpath that not only gives you the chance for some nature connection time but also takes you past some of the famous sights the city has to offer.
