Route Overview
The Sandstone Trail in Cheshire is one of the most popular mid-distance walks in the country – and it’s easy to see why. It’s a linear walk so you’ll need to either retrace your steps or arrange transport to get you back to the start if that’s where you left your car!

We’re starting our walk at the mediaeval fortification that was Beeston Castle which is now managed by English Heritage.

From here we head south on towards another castle – this time Peckforton Castle which is a luxury hotel and favoured place for celebrity weddings.

In the village of Higher Burwardsley we head east, up onto the Peckforton Hills before heading south once more. Following the ridge up towards the summit of Bulkeley Hill before heading west.

The panoramic views out across the Cheshire plains towards Liverpool are simply stunning. You’ll be wanting to stop on more than one occasion just to take it all in.

Skirting around Raw Head we have a steep descent round towards Bodnook Wood before heading into Harthill where our walk comes to an end.

This walk featured as part of Julia’s series of Britains Best Walks. It’s a popular route for dog-walking and sports – from the local Tough-Team race, to one of the top board and bike tracks in the country, not to mention the intrepid 4×4 off road experience at Peckforton.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
