Rainy Days
After what feels like an eternity of long, hot days and warm, muggy nights, I’m looking out of my window at the rain pouring down. What a welcome sight it is. The grass is slowly returning to green, the plants in my garden are beginning to perk up, and everything feels as though it can breathe again.
I know some of you may see the rain as a perfectly good reason to stay indoors, but I think it can be a wonderful time to head out for a walk. Rain transforms even the most familiar route and awakens the senses: the touch of raindrops on your skin, the sound of water falling through the leaves and that rich, earthy scent known as petrichor.
There is something wonderfully freeing about accepting the weather, pulling on the right kit and stepping outside anyway. So grab your waterproofs, put on your wellies and go and jump in a puddle or two, because you’re never too old to have fun outdoors!
Explore The Pembrokeshire Coast
This week we’re headed to Wales for our walk. This is a lovely 6km circular walk around Broad Haven – exploring the stunning coastline, wooded valley and stunning countryside of the Pembrokeshire Coast.
The Empty Coat Peg
Child poverty is not only revealed in statistics. Sometimes it looks like a coat that cannot keep out the rain, or no coat at all, shoes that are unsuitable for wet ground or a child watching through the classroom window as their friends head outside.
For families struggling to cover everyday essentials, waterproof clothing and wellies can be out of reach. Without them, children can miss forest school, outdoor lessons and the simple joy of getting muddy with their friends. These are not extras in a child’s day; they are opportunities to learn, explore and feel that they belong!
Waterproofs & Wellies helps remove that barrier. By the end of this autumn, we will have reached 160 State Primary Schools during 2026, giving more than 1,600 children the kit they need to step outside, warm, dry and ready to take part.
But 351 schools are still waiting. Behind every application are children whose chances of joining in can still be determined by the weather and what their families can afford.
A complete Waterproofs & Wellies kit for one child costs £39.50, but every donation brings another child closer to stepping outside, warm and dry, alongside their friends.
