Walk Details
Hello, I am Charlie Sim, retired engineer living in the Scottish Borders town of Peebles. I love walking and being outdoors – and I’m delighted to be sharing some of my favourite walks here with you.

This walk starts at the swimming pool car park. This is a circular walk as most of my walks are so you can do it in either direction.

This is a difficult hike over undulating ground, therefore good boots, sticks and appropriate clothing are recommended as conditions do change.

The walk takes us along Cuddyside to the Renault garage,we go under the road bridge up the set of steps onto the A703. Crossing the road to another set of gates, we go through and continue onto the track up past Venlaw Castle ( Smith Fields Castle). The castle dates back to around the 14th century.

Continuing onwards, we go past Venlaw towards Whitford Hill. This route takes you to the right – but you can also go towards the left and reach the same point. There are magnificent views all the way along this part of the route – so take your time to soak them in!

From here we then head back towards the A703 at Winkston Farm. There are two options here – a shorter route to the left that follows a quad bike track or another track to the right that takes you all the way down.

At the bottom turn left sticking to the verge, cross the road (please be careful as this is the main road from Edinburgh). Once across, we meet the Peebles to Eddleston cycle track (known locally as the multi use path). If you are looking to cut short your walk – you can follow this all the way back to Peebles.

We’re continuing on, past Kidston Wood and onto Hamilton Hill which offers great views out towards the Pentland Hills and surrounding area.

When you’re ready – follow the path back around the left side of Hamilton Hill through Standalane Farm onto Rosette Road. We go through the new houses over the playground onto Dalatho Bridge. This us back on the Cuddyside where we follow Eddleston Water back to town.

At Kidston Wood there is a hotel called Cringletie House, this has some great history and has an exquisite roof mural in the dining room, worth checking it out if you have time.

Remember to prepare properly before heading out on any type of walk or outdoor activity. Tell people where you are going and what time you are expected back. As Wainwright says "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".
