by Chris Gilbert and Mick Ryan

The Peak District is a beautiful upland area at the southern end of the Pennines stretching from Ashbourne in the south to the M62 in the north. The northern Dark Peak is an area of wild heather-clad moorland lined by gritstone edges and boulders that contrast with the limestone plateau and deep dales of the White Peak. Cut by sparkling rivers, populated with beautiful villages, a rich industrial heritage and home to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, the UK’s first national park has photographic opportunities around every corner, all year round.

Pitch Up Eat Local

Pitch Up, Eat Local

The Camping & Caravanning Club’s guide to the best of British produce. From grilling fresh fish on the barbecue after a day at the beach, or cooking up a feast for friends in a pot over a campfire, what we cook when we camp is a memorable part of the adventure. If that food is grown in surrounding fields, caught in nearby rivers or produced by local people, the experience is even richer – it connects us with the places we are visiting. Food can tell us the story of a place.

This book is full of those stories. Pitch Up, Eat Local is the Camping and Caravanning Club’s inspiring guide to amazing places to camp, and the fabulous food to cook there. Each campsite featured is close to great locally grown or produced foods. It is full of details and first-hand descriptions of farmers’ markets, doorstep sales, farm shops, pick-your-own and even the campsites that produce their own food.

Poldark: Ross by Winston Graham

You can’t go to Botallack mine without thinking of Poldark and taking one of the 12 Poldark novels with you.

This site was of course Wheal Leisure in the TV programmes and you’ll see so much of Poldark’s landscape by venturing on this walk and appreciating how difficult it would have been to ride horses along here for miles until the next village. Ross and Demelza might well be spotted as you walk to appreciate the surroundings which seem to be frozen in time.
