The Devonshire Arms – Dining

Combining classical country house style with fresh, exciting and modern 3 AA Rosette British menus is a skill our head chef, Paul Leonard, has perfected. Exquisite tasting menus are The Burlington’s speciality, with each dish being sourced from the local area, and ingredients from the hotel’s own kitchen garden.

Alternatively, our vibrant Brasserie & Bar is the perfect place to catch up for lunch or to mingle with friends for dinner, whilst enjoying a much deserved glass of wine after a hectic day. Sundays wouldn’t be complete without a traditional Sunday roast with family and friends, so why not treat yourself in one of the best Yorkshire places to dine.

The Devonshire Arms – Spa

The Devonshire Spa is housed in an ancient barn, adjacent to the Devonshire Arms Hotel. There are four generously-sized therapy rooms, an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, Rasul temple, relaxation space & lounge, with views over the tennis courts. You will find a separate gym next door with cardio, weights & resistance zones, ideal for body toning as well as pampering.

Simply staying within the tranquil, natural beauty of The Yorkshire Dales is therapy enough for some, yet we invite our guests to optimise their stay and spoil themselves with a spa experience too. Highly recommended are the word-class, rejuvenating Temple Spa treatments.

The Distant Hours by Kate Morton

Whilst not strictly set at Sissinghurst, Kate Morton’s book was heavily inspired by this castle and gardens. Milderhurst Castle as it appears in the book ‘The Distant Hours’, has a majestic tower where a writer lives with his three daughters.

He writes in his tower (exactly where real life inhabitants Rita Sackville West and her husband wrote) The tower becomes an integral part of the plot and the Kent countryside comes to live through Morton’s evocative writing. It’s an homage to this wondrous literary linked home.

The Inn at the Top: Tales of Life at the Highest Pub in Britain

The Inn at the Top: Tales of Life at the Highest Pub in Britain, Neil Hanson
The delightful tale of a young couple who in the late 1970s, on impulse, became the new landlords of the most remote, bleak and lonely pub – The Tan Hill Inn – located in the bleak landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Having seen an article in the newspaper about the pub's search for a new manager, they arrived just three weeks later as the new landlords of The Tan Hill Inn. It is a wild, wind-swept place, set alone in a sea of peat bog and heather moorland that stretches unbroken as far as the eye can see …

The Irresponsible Traveller: Tales of scrapes and narrow escapes (Phoebe Smith)

Publishing to coincide with Bradt’s 40th anniversary, The Irresponsible Traveller is a light but edgy collection of travellers’ tales. Travel writers and celebrities alike recount their exciting, and often dangerous, adventures which include being chased by a sea lion, accosted by Brazilian kidnappers and a midnight raid to free turtles on the Amazon. Over 40 years Bradt has built a reputation for publishing books covering the road less travelled, and this collection celebrates exactly the sort of writing and storytelling about ‘unusual’ travel experiences that has helped to establish the company as a firm favourite amongst adventurous travellers. Featuring contributions from Hilary Bradt, Michael Palin, Ben Fogle and Jonathan Scott, the title is a perfect tome to dip in and out of.
